TUNISIA.
Diverse enough to cater equally for sun-seekers, historians and adventure travel nuts, Tunisia is a heady hotchpotch of all the things that make North Africa so enticing. That’s not to say it lacks the fascinating rhythms of the Islamic world, of course – for an evocative taste of this part of the globe, Tunisia was the right place. Tunisia has been the subject of a remarkably colourful history, its current role as North Africa’s most progressive face the product of millennia spent being handed (or grabbed) from ruling power to ruling power. When Rome waned, Tunisia fell first into the hands of the Byzantine Empire and then the Arabs, who in turn were conquered by Ottoman Turks in the 16th century which inspired a large part of the remains standing there today.
